Saint Mechtilde of Magdeburg:

Saint Mechtilde of Magdeburg was a 13th century German Beguine who spent the last years of her life with the nuns at Helfta, including Saint Gertrude the Great and Saint Mechtilde of Hackeborn, both of whom have been called heralds of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

In this new film we look at the life of Saint Mechtilde of Magdeburg, her Beguine vocation, who the Beguines were and their significance today, Saint Mechtilde’s writings in ‘The Flowing Light of the Godhead’, and in particular her writings and visions of the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Beautiful artwork and vivid imagery capture the spirit of this great medieval German figure and offer a specific meditation upon the Holy Souls in Purgatory as well as why prayers for the Holy Souls are important and necessary.

 Saint Gertrude the Great was influenced by Saint Mechtilde of Magdeburg and we look at Saint Gertrude’s famous prayer for the Holy Souls in context with Saint Mechtilde’s work. It has been 10 years since the launch and release of our DVD about Saint Edmund Campion. This film was broadcast on EWTN for over five years and remains a popular and inspiring way to journey with this great English, Jesuit missionary priest and martyr, who gave his life at the Triple Tyburn Gallows in 1581.

In 1879, at the beginning of the Land War, and after 300 years of anti-Catholic persecution throughout Ireland, in a little village called Knock in County Mayo, an apparition of Our Lady, Saint Joseph and Saint John the Evangelist occurred before the astonished eyes of fifteen people. It took place at the south gable end of the small local parish church. A little to the left of Saint John was an altar, upon which stood a cross and a Lamb with adoring angels surrounding.

The apparition occurred after and during a time of enormous religious, social, cultural and economic sufferings for the Irish people. The appearance of the Ever Immaculate Mother of God affirmed God’s blessing upon the Catholic faithful of Ireland and Our Lady’s support and comfort in their trials, reminding the people that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, which for centuries had been attacked, outlawed and abused by the anti-Catholic oppressors of Ireland, is the most central, sacred and important act of worship and the greatest prayer on earth.

In this new film ‘Our Lady and the visionaries of Knock’ we look at the circumstances surrounding the apparition, the fifteen witnesses, Archdeacon Cavanagh who was the parish priest of Knock at that time and step back into Ireland’s past to 1536 when an Apostate Catholic King turned his bitter eyes upon a green emerald country that had once been described as the land of Saints and scholars.

We have been busy editing our new film about 'Our Lady and the visionaries of Knock' this week, which we decided to produce back in March when we had a filming day booked. It has been very inspiring to work on the editing, drawing all the elements of film production into a final presentation which has been exciting and very interesting.

Our film opens in 1879 at the beginning of the Land War, and after 300 years of persecutions of Catholics throughout Ireland, in the village of Knock, County Mayo, Ireland.

After a small presentation of the social and spiritual, economical, political and historical setting that was the situation in which the apparition at Knock occurred, we go back 300 years to 1536 and King Henry VIII of England, who declared himself the King of Ireland and decided to conquer the country to bring it under crown control and introduce the Protestant Reformation.

The journey through the history of Ireland is fascinating, tragic and powerful; to see clearly Satan's attack upon the country once described as the land of Saints and scholars.

We look at 'Silken Thomas' and his role in unwittingly drawing his cousin, King Henry VIII's eyes with full force upon Ireland. We journey through the 16th and 17th centuries to see the rebellions, persecutions and terrible attacks upon the Irish faithful by the English government, including plantations, evictions and wars, as they tried to suppress and destroy the Catholic Faith in Ireland.

We look briefly at the life and martyrdom of Saint Oliver Plunkett and the terrible Test Act which required all persons filling any office that was military or civil, the obligation of taking the oaths of supremacy and allegiance and pledging to a testimony against transubstantiation and also of receiving the Catholic Sacrament within three months after admittance to office!

Next, we look at the cruel and neglectful English landowners, the potato famines and social and political unrest in Ireland as the continued attacks against the faithful Catholic Irish people continues, twhich takes us to the setting of the apparition of Knock in 1879.

We really enjoyed presenting the events that took place in Knock, Ireland. Having visited the Shrine several times ourselves, it was really nice to immerse ourselves in the beautiful and profound events.

We spent some time carefully aging the footage of our recreation of the visionaries and Archdeacon Cavanagh which draws the viewer back into the moments of August 21st 1879. Archdeacon Cavanagh was the parish priest at Knock at the time of the apparition. Although he did not witness the apparition himself, his love for Our Lady and the Holy Souls in Purgatory was already renowned. He was self-sacrificing, devoted, never took a holiday and lived a life of service to his flock as well as having a life of deep prayer and contemplation. After the apparition he spent his time hearing confessions, preaching to the pilgrims, responding to letters and keeping a detailed journal of the miracles and healing that took place.

It was especially enjoyable to work with the recreations we filmed of the witnesses to the apparition. Alongside the main narration we recorded testimonies of four of the witnesses. This gives us a good look at the details of what they saw, the atmosphere of prayer, and also the significance of the vision which took place over 2-3 hours.

The film concludes with a look at Knock after the apparition to the present day, including a short focus upon Monsignor Horan who is known today as the builder of Knock. For this recreation we invited our current parish priest to portray Monsignor Horan. He himself is from Ireland and had a good few stories to tell about Monsignor Horan.

We also included some photographs of a 1994 pilgrimage we took to Knock with our late parish priest. He was very devout and spent his retirement hearing confessions at Knock until his death three years ago. It was very special to us to be able to include him in our film.

Last night we decided to plan our August Vlog update about current film productions and we planned to make a special Vlog about Saint Gemma Galgani and the significance of the Passion Flower the following morning. We planned our Vlog, decided to stand in front of our passion vine at the end of our garden and made notes and gathered information. The vine has been creeping along with its beautiful flowers and fruit and looked magnificent over our back gate.

Imagine our shock when we woke up and began to get ready and found that someone was in the process of hacking it to pieces! We managed to stop them just in time so that we had a bit of a back drop and some flowers to be able to do our presentation but what timing!

It's lovely to be able to have a passionflower vine in a Catholic garden because the flowers have been used for centuries to speak about the Passion of Christ. All aspects of the flower represent certain elements of Jesus' Passion. Saint Gemma Galgani had a great devotion to the Passion of Christ and understood the significance of all that Jesus suffered.

Satan hated Saint Gemma Galgani, especially her prayers for the conversion of sinners. For two years Saint Gemma suffered the stigmata and passion of Christ every Friday. She had a great sense of the realty of sin and offered many prayers of reparation. Because of her link to the Passion of Christ, her desire to be a Passionist nun and her great purity, among the many beautiful names for Gemma are 'The Passion Flower of Lucca' and 'The White Passion Flower of Lucca'.

In several books or paintings of Saint Gemma, the passionflower vine and its flowers are often used to decorate the covers or accompany the image.

The Passionflower vine that grows at the end of our garden is a Blue Passionflower. It is also known as 'blue crown', 'flower of 5 wounds' and 'Jesus flower'. It is a wonderful Catholic plant due to its symbolism of the Passion. It is also persistent, hardy and sometimes called a nuisance!

Spanish missionaries used the structures of the plant to instruct converts about the Passion of Christ. Varies elements of the flower represent the Crown of Thorns, the Nails, the Holy Lance, and the colours represent heaven and purity.

The flower presents a beautiful link to Saint Gemma Galgani, the Passion Flower of Lucca and we look forward to presenting our DVD about Saint Gemma. In our August Vlog we shall be speaking about the flower and about St Gemma. We will be putting our Vlog together and it will be available to watch on our Youtube channel soon.

In March of this year we filmed some scenes from St Gemma Galgani's life for our DVD. Here are some screenshots of footage we shall be using in the film:

The girl who portrayed St Gemma for us made her Confirmation a few months later and chose St Gemma as her Confirmation name and patron Saint. What a wonderful Saint to choose!

A NEW FILM

Mary's Dowry Productions is presently working hard to finish production on several of our DVDs that we have filmed for over the past 2 years. Finally, at the end of this month (July 2018) we are now ready to complete work on a new film: 'Saint Mechtilde of Magdeburg and the Souls in Purgatory' so before we start editing we would like to tell you a little bit about this upcoming DVD.

We wanted to have a film that looks in greater detail at Purgatory in the teachings of the Catholic Church and while we could have used many examples and stories, accounts and teachings from well-known Saints such as Padre Pio, Faustina, Catherine of Siena and more, we have focused upon a little known German Beguine and Mystical author, Mechtilde of Magdeburg who had a deep concern for the Holy Souls and wrote about Purgatory often in her book 'The Flowing Light of the Godhead'. It actually worked out that way through several circumstances providing an excellent presentation of purgatory, sin, Saints and teachings of the Church, especially through the councils.

We actually had a tough time producing this film from day one. Our first action was to set off to a ruined Sussex barn in the next village from us to acquire costumed footage of a Beguine. It was SO windy, but not only that, we forgot the safety pins for fastening part of the Beguine habit so it kept blowing off the whole time - a real test of patience.

So our actress's hand is often seen beneath her throat in a humble aspect, actually fighting the elements to stop her wimple flying away.

Production upon this film has suffered many set backs since.

We have been trying to compete the research and narrative for almost two years, with other projects coming to the forefront of necessity. Now we are finally able to set about finally editing the film production together and making it available on DVD.

It has been a goal of ours and important to us to produce a couple of films about the Beguines as we share their vocation. Beguines first appeared in the 12th century with women called by God not to live in religious community or take religious vows but to give their lives in service and devotion of Him as single laywomen, often with apostolates. Modern Beguines today can live with their parents or alone or can be widowed. They are often classed as 'single people'. Because a Beguine does not take a vow she is free to stop becoming a Beguine at any time. She is also able to focus upon different devotions such as favouring Carmelite spirituality or Benedictine spirituality. She may pray the Hours, attend Mass when possible, pray the rosary and psalms, keep notes from the lives of the Saints and writings that inspire her, practice the virtues, undertake simple work in the world to support herself or her apostolate, and seeks to be in the world but not of it. Many Beguines throughout history were mystics and compiled writings.

They followed no rule of life, had spiritual independence, were deeply Sacramental, imitated the lives of the first Apostles, lived in solitude, were self-defined, passionate about ministry, were often reformers, poets, servants of the poor and undertook manual work, study, teaching and prayer.

Beguines were similar to anchoresses. They have always been important for the Church in that they prayed and pray daily for the Church. They are also devoted to the Pope and share or defend the Faith. There are many Beguines around today but because most of them are hidden we don't hear much about them. Historically, Beguines enjoyed times of favour and times of condemnation in the history of the Church. Because they often rebuked laxity or corruption within the Church, and because they were not under the control of a local bishop or priest, the clergy often regarded them with suspicion. Beguines were officially approved by the Church and then it was decreed that Beguines must join religious orders or live in Beguine communities. The last Beguine in an enclosed community died in 2013.

Beguines also had and have a deep love for Our Lady who, according to Saint Douceline, a Beguine of Provence, was the first Beguine. There are famous Beguines such as Hadewijch, Douceline, Mary of Oignies and Beatrice of Nazareth. Some Beguine's writings were condemned and some were approved and continue to be a source of insight and inspiration today. There are a few books about Beguines available today, but not many, and it is difficult to find translations of the writings of Beguines of their spiritual directors. Laura Swan's book 'The Wisdom of the Beguines'  gives a good inside to this often overlooked and hidden women's movement.

Saint Mechtilde of Magdeburg was a Beguine of Germany. She lived the last years of her life in the convent at Helfta with Saint Gertrude the Great and Saint Mechtilde and Saint Gertrude of Helfta. Gertrude the Great and Mechtilde of Helfta were both renowned for heralding the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The writings of Saint Mechtilde of Magdeburg can be noted in both Gertrude and (the other) Mechtilde's beautiful books.

Our film about 'Saint Mechtilde of Magdeburg and The Souls in Purgatory' is not only a good way to get to know the life and writings of this 13th century Beguine and mystic (she was the first mystic to write in German; Gertrude and Mechtilde of Helfta's books were in Latin), but it is also a good way to meditate upon the Souls in Purgatory, with Saint Gertrude's prayer, examples from Saint Mechtilde and the Catholic teaching about Purgatory throughout the film. Her encounters with purgatory and specific souls is really moving and inspiring.

The footage that we shot back in 2017 will be used for Saint Mechtilde in this upcoming film and we hope to be able to produce future DVDs about the Beguines so as to offer some more imagery and portrayals to help make their spirituality, heritage and vocation better known.

A future DVD about 'Edel Quinn' and her Legion of Mary missionary work, filming, DVD, Catholic Faith

VENERABLE EDEL QUINN

FILMING FIRST SHOTS

We have been taking advantage of the super hot weather here on the south coast of England this week to go out filming some scenes for a DVD about 'Edel Quinn' that we have wanted to produce for sometime. We are auxiliary members of the Legion of Mary, which means we pray the Legion prayers, but sadly our Praesidium in our parish church closed about a decade ago. We were always interested in Edel Quinn and would like to share her story on DVD. She is very inspiring.

Part of Edel's biography takes place in Africa, the last eight years of her life in fact. With the baked ground and scorched grasses on the south down and surrounding fields here we decided to get creative and go out into the local areas to capture some 'African missionary' imagery we will be able to incorporate in our film.

We organised a suitable costume (from our mother's wardrobe!) and a wig from Amazon and set off with a notebook, pencil and rosary for props. Our location was in Findon at a place called Cissbury Ring, an ancient hill fort with fields and hills we have used before in our films.

Camera work was tricky, trying to keep the British trees out of the shots as much as possible, plus we were accosted by lots of dogs enjoying their walks. But we returned home with twenty minutes of footage which we looked at and played around with some burnt orange filters to give an even hotter 'African' feel to it all.

We hope to go out again sometime, while the hot weather is still scorching our English fields, to acquire some more footage. For the beginning of Edel's story we will need some lush green countryside for her life in Ireland, so we will be waiting for the rain to get on to that part.

Meanwhile, our film about 'Our Lady and the visionaries of Knock' is underway and we are keen to complete the several films already in production so as to make them available on DVD and spread the word about these great Catholic figures of the Church.
