St. John Fisher, the devout Bishop of Rochester, is loved by thousands today not only for his priestly example but for his heroic defence of the Catholic Faith in Tudor England that saw him earn the crown of Martyrdom. 

We look at the whole life of St. John Fisher from his birth to his arrest and confinement in the Tower of London where he was named Cardinal of England and shortly after beheaded on Tower Hill.  Historical characters such as Lady Margaret Beaufort, Kings Henry VII and Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, St. Thomas More, Thomas Cromwell and many others make this a journey of history, politics and Faith in 16th Century England.

He was born in Somerset, studied under Fr. Robert Persons, was ordained a Catholic priest and returned to England on the English Mission.  His capture and torture give beautiful insights into the Passion of Christ - he carved a little Cross and wrote a poignant and insightful letter before his execution. 

A reverent witness to the Catholic Faith his story is presented in this new documentary.

Saint Alexander Briant, a 25 year old Catholic priest from Somerset, was executed at the infamous Triple gallows of Tyburn with Saint Edmund Campion in 1581.

Saint Richard Gwyn, Welsh Martyr, Elizabethan

Saint RICHARD GWYN, the first Welsh martyr of Elizabeth I’s reign, was born about 1537 in Lianidloes, Montgomeryshire. He studied for a short time at Oxford, and then went to St. John’s College, Cambridge. Returning to Wales about 1562, he became a schoolmaster and taught in Flintshire and Denbighshire. He married and had six children. Arrested in Wrexham in 1578, he escaped, but he was arrested again in 1580. After being tried and remanded several times at the Assizes, he was finally condemned to death at Wrexham, in October1584, for refusing to recognize the Queen as head of the Catholic Church in England and persuading others to become Catholics.

Two days before his death he was offered his freedom if he would conform to the State religion. As he left the prison on his way to execution, he said to his fellow prisoners: ‘Weep not for me, for I do but pay the rent before the rent day.’ On the scaffold he forgave his executioner, acknowledged Elizabeth I to be the lawful Queen of England and denied that he had ever committed any treason against her; but he still refused to recognize her as head of the Church.

 As he prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner,’ he was pushed off the ladder and cut down while still alive and disembowelled.  St Richard Gwyn, Catholic layman suffered death for hearing the Mass and for being a Roman Catholic. He died at Wrexham on 15 October 1584.

Blessed Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, mother of Cardinal Reginald Pole, English Martyr

Margaret Pole the Blessed, Countess of Salisbury (14 August 1473 - 27 May 1541) was an English Martyr of the Catholic Church. She was the daughter of George of Clarence, who was the brother of King Edward IV and King Richard III. She was one of two women in sixteenth-century England to be a peeress in her own right with no titled husband.  One of the few surviving members of the Plantagent dynasty after the War of the Roses, she was executed in 1541 at the command of King Henry VIII who was her cousin Elizabeth's son and also father of her Goddaughter the Princess Mary Tudor.  She was beheaded while in her 70's.  Pope Leo XIII beatified her as a martyr for the on 29 December 1886.  For a detailed presentation of her life in Tudor England, her story on DVD from Mary's Dowry Productions, Catholic film production company based in England:

St. Edmund Gennings (Saint Edmund Jennings) met St. Polydore Plasden (a fellow English Martyr) at a seminary in France. Both went back to England to offer the outlawed Mass and were helped by St. Swithun Wells (also a fellow English Martyr). Our film about Saint Edmund Gennings runs for half an hour and follows the steady timeline of his life and mission.

The city of York, England can boast of many heroic and outstanding men and women of the Catholic Faith who were prepared to give their lives rather than renounce the Faith.  Many of the men and women remembered by the Church are from the 16th and 17th Century.

We call to mind in particular Saint Margaret Clitherow who is numbered among the

FORTY MARTYRS OF ENGLAND AND WALES also.

Among the many Martyrs remembered in York are Thomas Percy, Earl of Northumberland, who was beheaded under Elizabeth I, and Nicholas Postgate, known as Martyr of the Moors, who lived and worked in Ryedale and the North York Moors, and was one of the last Catholics to be executed for their faith in England in 1679.

Mary's Dowry Productions currently has available two DVDs presenting the life of Saint Margaret Clitherow.  The Shining Pearl of York plays for half an hour and begins with the execution of Blessed Thomas Percy.  Saint Margaret Clitherow runs for 1 hour.

St Etheldreda, Abbess of Ely, English Saint, film, DVD of her life, Mary's Dowry Productions

Saint Etheldreda is one of our early Catholic Saints. She was one of the four saintly daughters of Anna of East Anglia, all of whom eventually retired from secular life and founded abbeys.

Saint Etheldreda made an early first marriage in around 652 to Tondberct, chief or prince of the South Gyrwe. She managed to persuade her husband to respect her vow of perpetual virginity that she had made prior to their marriage. Upon his death in 655, she retired to the Isle of Ely, which she had received from Tondberct as a morning gift.

Saint Etheldreda was subsequently remarried for political reasons in 660, this time to Ecgfrith of Northumbria. Shortly after his accession to the throne in 670, Saint Etheldreda became a nun. This step possibly led to Ecgfrith's long quarrel with Saint Wilfrid, the holy bishop of York. The king tried to take his queen from the cloister by force. Saint Etheldreda fled back to Ely with two nuns and managed to evade capture, thanks in part to the miraculous rising of the tide. She halted on the journey at 'Stow' and sheltered under a miraculously growing ash tree which came from her staff planted in the ground. Stow came to be known as 'St Etheldred's Stow', when a church was built to commemorate this event. King Ecgfrith was so stuck by the miracle of the sea protecting Saint Etheldreda from him that he released her from the arranged marriage which had never been consummated. Saint Etheldreda founded a double monastery at Ely in 673, which was later destroyed in the Danish invasion of 870.

All of these fascinating events are presented in our DVD, however, the narrative is told from Saint Etheldreda's point of view.
